Also know as Sprig the Pintail with its longer neck and long tail is several inches longer than mallards while actually weighing about 20% less. Swift in flight and graceful in appearance pintail can also be recognized at a distance by the male’s short distinctive whistling call.
Pintail population surveys have usually recognized them as the second of third most abundant duck species in North America. Pintails have the widest range in the Northern Hemisphere of any other ducks. They winter as far south as Borneo Malaysia, India, and Central Africa. Breeding populations move as far north as Siberia, the Scandinavian Peninsula, Iceland and Greenland in the summer.
The North American range includes the Great Lakes, Central Kansas, southern Colorado, northwester New Mexico and southern California.
